About Us

Historical Happenings was begun by the Matson family with the purpose of
helping homeschool families and others find enjoyment in history. History
has always been a favorite subject of the three Matson boys (Isaac, Caleb
and Zechariah) and their best memories of history are those that have been
recreated through play. We as a family have spent many memorable hours
making costumes, preparing food and recreating periods of history, all for
the purpose of homeschooling.

It is a well known fact in the education world that children learn best by
"doing" and not just hearing. This is why we have science experiments, art
class and field trips, but why stop there. Recreating history can incorporate
many different skills such as art, creativity, drama and cooperation among
peers. The goal of Historical Happenings is to help families in their efforts to
make history come alive for their children.

Because we have three boys, we do have a strong emphasis on military
history, but we are hoping to broaden our scope of products to include the
much needed "women folk". As you will see in many of our pictures, there
have always been plenty of "Fair Maidens" and "Southern Belles" at the
various get togethers, as well as some of the female gender toting their own
weapons right into the thick of things.
